Happy Presidents Day

Sen. Tom Cotton with Benton Police Officers
by Senator Tom Cotton: I hope you are enjoying this Presidents Day weekend with family and friends. While this holiday is intended to celebrate all past presidents, it originated as a way to honor the birthday of our first President, George Washington. Washington’s birthday was an unofficial observance for most of the 1800s until the late 1870s when Senator Steven Wallace Dorsey from Arkansas proposed the measure to become a federal holiday. We all owe our fellow Arkansan a debt of gratitude for this long weekend!

George Washington’s home and burial spot, Mt. Vernon, is just 18 miles from the U.S. Capitol and I encourage any Arkansans in town to take a trip to see this beautiful, historic, landmark. If you are planning a trip to Washington, D.C., be sure and contact my office for information about Mt. Vernon and other tours and activities in the city.
