Boozman Bulletin: Arkansas Agriculture Tour

by Sen, John Boozman: Arkansas Agriculture Tour

Agribusiness is critical to Arkansas. One out of every six jobs in Arkansas is tied to the industry making it aleading economic engine in our state. To be serious about job creation in Arkansas, we must be in tune with the needs of the agriculture economy and our rural communities. Washington’s decisions on agriculture policy dramatically impact our state’s economy. As a member of Congress, I'm committed to staying in touch with the needs of our farmers, ranchers, processors and foresters.

That’s why I conduct an annual Agriculture Tour. Last week I traveled across the state meeting with family farmers, facility managers, agriculture researchers and others who make their living growing, processing and securing our supply of food and fiber.

This year’s tour was extremely beneficial as there are a lot of important issues facing the agriculture community that Arkansas producers were eager to discuss including the farm bill, the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule, school nutrition and country of origin labeling (COOL).
Above left: Joe Thrash gave me a tour of his Perry County farm. Recent flooding impacted Thrash's soybean farm. Above right: I ate lunch with students at Wooster Elementary School in Greenbrier. The Senate Ag Committee will debate the reauthorization of child nutrition programs next month. I talked with school administrators about the importance of child nutrition programs like the national school lunch program, my bill to reform the summer meal program and the challenges the school's program faces.
