Sen. Boozman: Tax Day

by US Sen. John Boozman: Today, millions of Americans will make that last minute trip to the Post Office to mail tax returns and get the IRS off their checklist for another year.

But there’s an astonishing fact that most Americans don’t realize. According to the Tax Foundation, "Tax Freedom Day" in 2015 won’t arrive until April 24. That's the day when our nation as a whole has earned enough money to pay its federal, state and local tax bill for the year. You read it right - 114 days in 2015 before we have made enough money just to break even.

It's no wonder so many Americans feel overtaxed.

Our current income tax system is fundamentally flawed, outdated and in need of a complete overhaul. Today’s tax code is unfair, discourages against savings and investment, and is impossibly complex. I am committed to modernizing our tax code, eliminating the complexities and bringing relief to Arkansas’s families and business owners through commonsense tax reform.

But we also have to cut spending so we can finally balance the federal budget. It won't be easy, and it will take quite awhile to get it done, but we can balance the budget, get our spending under control and cut taxes for all Americans.

As a nation, we have to make sure that we keep the promises we have made - to our veterans, to our seniors, and to those less fortunate than we are. We can keep those promises and make long range plans now to balance the budget.

Do you agree with me that the Federal Government must balance its budget, just as you and I do? I’d like to hear from you. Leave a comment here .

Thanks for your continuing support.
