ICYMI- Politico Pro: NRA Asks Patrick Henry Hays To Cease And Desist

By James Hohmann, Politico Pro: Patrick Henry Hays, a Democratic candidate for an open House seat in Arkansas, has an “F” rating from the National Rifle Association. The group’s Political Victory Fund has committed to spend a million dollars defeating him.

But Hays bought a membership in the NRA, as can anyone, and Democrats are now pulling quotes from a generic direct-mail fundraising solicitation and using it in misleading mailers to imply that the group — and its leader, Wayne LaPierre — actually supports him.

The NRA Political Victory Fund sent cease-and-desist letters Thursday to the state party and Hays, demanding that they stop using LaPierre’s image.

But, just a few days before the election, Hays is not backing down. He quietly put an ad on TV that notes he’s an NRA “member” and shows off his collection of guns.

Hays’ efforts reflect how potent gun rights remain in the South.

The mailers hitting homes in the 2nd District use a form letter that went out to most NRA members in which LaPierre wrote, “Thank you for your personal friendship to me and your inspiring leadership of NRA. … Whenever NRA needed leadership, you never hesitated to step forward. … America’s gun owners owe you a tremendous debt of gratitude. … You made it possible for us to build a stronger NRA.”

All four quotes are on a mailer from the Democratic Party under the heading, “It’s time you heard from Wayne LaPierre … where Patrick really stands on our Second Amendment rights.”

The NRA is particularly irked because they can point to a host of issues where Hays, the former mayor of North Little Rock, opposes them, including background checks, restricting gun show sales and opposing concealed-carry reciprocity. He’s even been a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group supported by NRA nemesis and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Hays did not respond to the NRA’s candidate questionnaire, and he’s never once contacted the group, it said.

Sent the cease-and-desist letter, Hays campaign manager David Furr emailed: “Mayor Hays is a longtime member of the NRA, has a concealed carry permit, owns a variety of firearms, cherishes the shotgun his daddy gave him, and will be a strong protector of the right to keep and bear arms.”

A spokeswoman for the state party declined to comment.
